Kids Club

We did a 2 day Kids Club at St Luke’s in the first week and then the same program at Trinity church in the 2nd week. Overall, we had about 25-30 kids come each day to learn from the Book of Jonah. Our theme was Survivor Nineveh, styled after the Survivor TV show and based on the ‘island’ of Nineveh, which is where Jonah was sent by God to preach. [Scarily, one of our Aussie leaders asked us, ‘Where’s Nineveh?’, thinking we were talking about a place in South Africa.] We split off into 5 tribes with 2-3 leaders in each tribe. Each group had to face paint tribal symbols and make up a tribal sign and name.

The churches were each decorated as desolate islands where we were shipwrecked on and we had to do different immunity challenges in order to be rescued in the end.

From Jonah (Ch 1 & 3), the kids learnt that God has mercy on his people:
  • Jonah was trying to run away from God. While running away, he gets thrown into the sea during a big storm. But instead of letting Jonah drown, God shows his mercy on a repentant Jonah and sends him a big fish to save him.
  • The people in Nineveh lived their life without God and acted immorally. Jonah tells the Ninevites that God will destroy them unless they change their ways and turn to God. The Ninevites heed Jonah’s warning and repent, thus God does not destroy the city.

We had never organised a Kids Club before and it was extremely challenging and satisfying seeing it all come together. Ka also did her first public talk, which went well (as she bribed the kids to listen by giving prizes away). The mission team were really in their element with the kids, which was pleasantly surprising as some had never taught primary school kids before. At Trinity, the Kids Club worked a bit differently. Our role was more to train some of the teenagers from the Youth Group so that they could lead the Kids Club.

We took a supervisory and training role and were so pleased to see how much the Youth improved in their confidence, leading and teaching over the 2 days. On the evening of the second day of each Kids Club, we ran an Outreach Service to the parents of the kids. The children were encouraged to bring their parents along to show them what they had learnt over the last 2 days. Most of the children were involved in performing a presentation of some sort (eg memory verse, a short play, a song, telling the story of Jonah) and the parents were so impressed by how much they had learnt.

The parents at Trinity were doubly impressed with the Youth who had really stepped up in their leadership and chaired the whole night service. It was an amazing experience for us and we really thank God for making everything come together so smoothly and blessing our time.

As part of our survivor theme, we split up into 5 tribes and came up with a tribe name and tribal action: (last 5 photos): Minh and CC
leading the Purple Pirates, Neville and Rebecca leading the Black Wildcats, Eddie and Fiona leading the Pink Pirates, Tom and Mary leading the Orange Volcanoes and Nicole and Ka leading the Green Goblin dancers.
